The nine year old was all alone at the moment. Actually she had been alone for some time, over two months if she had counted right. The brunette walked out of the old shabby house she was staying in. The roof was caved in, but Marlene found a perfect place that was protected from the elements. She smiled as the morning sun hit her pale skin. Marlene looked around the street, hopeful, young eyes glancing from place to place. When she saw no one she knew, her smile vanished.
"Hope I'll find Daddy today." Marlene paused before continuing her voiced thought. "I hope I find somebody today."
Marlene smiled slightly as she skipped down the street. She wouldn’t let herself be sad for long. Her family wouldn’t want that. 'I'll find them. Even if it takes a long time.' |
Marlene continued skipping down the street in hopes of seeing a familiar face. There were many new people in the Garden. However, none of them were the faces she wanted to see. She couldn’t find the sweet, almost innocent face of Aerith. There wasn’t a single sound that sounded like her Daddy’s laughter. She hadn’t smelt anything that was like Tifa’s cooking. She hadn’t heard of a man that looked like Cloud. Though she hadn’t found her family, she knew she had to stay positive. None of her family members liked seeing her sad. ’I’ll find them.’With that thought in mind, Marlene slowed to a walk. She found her spot and sat down. Her ‘spot’ was a fallen wall that had a perfect view of the town square. She could see everyone from her spot.[/style] (WORDS) 288 (TAGS) open (NOTES) lalala (CREDIT) template made by oxymoron! of back to neverland[/style][atrb=valign,top][atrb=style,padding-top:16px; padding-left:10px; padding-bottom:5px;][STYLE=width:100px; height:100px; border:2px solid #282828;] [/style] [STYLE=width:100px; height:100px; border:2px solid #282828;] [/style]

❤ YOU FEEL JUST LIKE THE SUN It... didn’t look like anything she remembered. Not from her childhood. Not from when she’d awoken after regaining her heart. Hollow Bast-- Radiant Garden was a whole new world for her, and Kairi wanted to absorb as much of it as she could manage. Of course, the sightseeing was second to her operative goal: finding Sora. For once, she was not waiting at home on Destiny Islands for him to return; she was the one looking for him. Though there was no break in the hazy memories from the last three years, Kairi felt that the first place to look for Sora was in places that he had visited, and the only ones she knew for certain were Hollo-- Radiant Garden, Traverse Town, and Twilight Town.
Shouldering her backpack, Kairi trekked around the better part of the districts, asking people if they’d seen a teenage boy with spiky brown hair, large shoes, and a chipper smile. Passively, she checked for Leon or Yuffie or Aerith so that she could ask them for Sora by name, but she wasn’t entirely preoccupied by looking for them. The number of Heartless attacks would eventually bring them all together. They always seemed to gather vigilantes into one place, despite the security system set up to combat them.
”Ugh, this thing is so heavy.” In hindsight, it was probably not the smartest idea to pack so much stuff on a search-and-rescue mission. She didn’t really need the pictures of home and multitude of change of clothes. The shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, granola bars, and books for when she got bored were also probably optional. Lovely to have in case her bad breath scared off potential help, but not so lovely to carry about. At least she hadn’t listened to her mother, a woman who seemed intent upon having Kairi pack the kitchen sink even if it meant she couldn’t leave at all-- and Kairi had a sneaking suspicion that had been her plan all along.
After another hour of hauling her stuff around, Kairi called it quits and let her backpack drop to the cobblestone ground of the town center. A hand massaged her shoulder as she wondered briefly if the first aid kit inside had suffered irreparable damage from her manhandling. The streets were bustling; throngs of people passed her by, some heading into shops, some heading out. Everyone looked... different. Their outfits, their skin color-- on occasion, their fur color-- were all mismatched, a myriad, a hodgepodge of variety. Kairi had heard from some of the townspeople that Radiant Garden had become a refuge for some much like Traverse Town, but she hadn’t realised how true it was until she really stopped and looked.
Maybe she was ungrateful. Some people had lost their entire worlds. She just lost a boy.
”No! I suck for thinking that,” Kairi muttered. There was no comparing loss. Besides, Sora was a hero! Radiant Garden wouldn’t be here without him. As she took another moment to sweep the crowd for his face, Kairi noted a younger girl. She hadn’t seen her at first, the way she sat so high above the rest of them, but there she was, probably with a decent view of the whole square. Hey... ”Hello!” She waved. ”Have you seen a boy about my age? He’s a bit taller than me with spiky brown hair. He has a key as a weapon.”

She looked at people, hoping to see one of her family members. There were many different people in the Garden. While Marlene looked for a sign of her family, she watched the different people that walked in the square.
Marlene could see a group of kids running through the crowds. ’I bet they’re stealing things.’ Marlene sighed. ”I won’t help them if they get caught, but I won’t tell anyone. They’re just trying to survive.”
Marlene smiled as she thought of the people who helped her survive. There were many people in the area she lived in who helped each other. Down the street was an old woman who let her stay with her during storms, which Marlene had always been afraid of. Across from the old woman was a new mother who let Marlene eat with her family. The shop owner two streets down let Marlene work around the store for some extra cash, though it wasn’t much.
Marlene shook her head and turned her attention back to the streets below her. There were a lot of new people in the Garden. Most of them were refugees and didn’t have much. Marlene spotted a woman trying to get her things together. Before Marlene could jump down to help her, a young man Marlene knew stopped to help. A couple of other people helped pick the items off the ground before handing them to the woman. The young man took some of the woman’s things and spoke to the woman.
”At least there are still good people here,” Marlene smiled as the man and woman left the square together. ”I’ll go see them tonight. He always let’s new people stay in his house.”
”Hello!” someone called out.
Marlene looked around and saw a young teen waving at her from the ground. Marlene waved back as she listened to the girl’s description of a friend.
’A teenage boy with spiky brown hair?’ Marlene thought as she glanced around the square. No one in the square looked to have that description, at least from what she could see.
”Wait. Did she say he had a weapon?” Marlene asked herself.
When the initial shock went away, Marlene started to climb down from her spot. She ended up next to the girl. Marlene smiled widely at the tired teen. The nine year old could see that the red haired girl had had many restless nights.
”I haven’t seen anyone like that, but I know an area where a lot of teens hang out. He might be there. I can take you if you want. I know where it is.” Marlene paused before adding an afterthought. ”If we don’t find him today, you can stay with me for the night. You look really tired. I’m Marlene by the way. ❤ YOU FEEL JUST LIKE THE SUN She shifted her weight from foot to foot and shook out her arms, partly to loosen her worn out muscles, partly because she was falling asleep on her feet. It was harder than she realized… to find Sora, that was. Unlike Riku, Kairi wasn't used to traveling from world to world searching for someone; she was always the girl being dragged around either unconscious or unwillingly. The strain, the despair, the feeling of futility that weighed down her bones was a foreign feeling and one that tired her out faster than she would have assumed.
Rubbing the back of her hand across her eyes, she waited a moment for the little girl to answer, and when she did, it seemed as if Kairi had deflated. Her shoulders dropped; her head dropped. Though she hadn't have given the best of descriptions, she felt that a boy like Sora wouldn't be missed twice, and if the girl had been present when Sora was off on his years of heroics, then perhaps she'd have known him with the sparest of glances. Chances were… Sora wasn't in Radiant Garden. Two worlds down, hundreds-- maybe thousands, she mentally corrected--more to go.
"If we don't find him today, you can stay with me for the night," Marlene said with an admirable amount of compassion. To offer a stranger to come home with her was a noble gesture, one that managed to push a little more spring back in Kairi's demeanor.
Tilting her head and pressing her tongue briefly to the roof of her mouth, Kairi asked, "Will your parents mind?" There was no way she was going to turn down the offer if it was viable. Sleeping on the ground did not seem like the kind of camping out she was up for. How did Sora do it all those years? Kairi shook her head, nudging her bag slightly out the way as she approached the wall Marlene sat on. Spreading her arms, she flickered her gaze slightly and offered a smile as if to say she'd be willing to help her down.
"I think I'll go see the place you're talking about. Maybe my friend is there goofing off." A crinkled nose in mild amusement. The idea was almost too good to hope for.

It wasn’t the first time someone had asked her about her family, and she knew it wouldn’t be the last. Marlene shook her head as she spoke, ”My family isn’t here. And if they were, I’m certain they would want you to stay with us.”
The way the girl looked and seemed overall made Marlene believe they wouldn’t find the girl’s friend. However, Marlene knew serveral teens who hung in the Garden weren’t from the world originally. Maybe they would get lucky. There had been times before that Marlene had luck on her side. Perhaps this was another of those times. I hope we find him. It’s much easier to travel with people than by yourself. She looks like she needs her friend too. |
Marlene grabbed the girl’s hand and started to pull her through the crowd. Marlene only stopped when she needed to wait for people to move. The way to the alley they used was across the square and it was hard to get from one side to the other. Luckily Marlene knew where most of the breaks would be. She had watched the crowds of the square so many times that it wouldn’t bother her anymore. ”There’s a whole bunch of people here now. The Garden wasn’t always this full, but now people come here to start over and find family members. My family is actually from here. That’s why I watch the square; I look for them,” Marlene chattered. ”You don’t look like someone I know. I know most kids my age too! My family was always helping where they could. I try to too!” Marlene stopped suddenly as they reached the other side of the square. The nine year old turned to her new friend with a small smile. ”Okay, so, not a lot of outsiders are allowed here. I know a lot of the older kids though, so we’ll be safe. Just stick to me okay?”[/style] (WORDS) 327 (TAGS) open,Kairi (NOTES) I just realized that Kairi had yet to introduce herself (CREDIT) template made by oxymoron! of back to neverland[/style][atrb=valign,top][atrb=style,padding-top:16px; padding-left:10px; padding-bottom:5px;][STYLE=width:100px; height:100px; border:2px solid #282828;] [/style] [STYLE=width:100px; height:100px; border:2px solid #282828;] [/style]
